A stall owner in Sham Shui Po stopped selling dog furs after inspectors from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department demanded to see his business license.

The department acted on a tip from a concerned citizen who saw brown furs, apparently made of dog skin, being sold for HK$300 apiece on Kweilin桂林 Street last Saturday, the Hong Kong Animal Post reported.

According to the informer, the stall owner claimed the furs were from Tibetan mastiffs 藏獒raised in Beijing. 北京

When the inspectors confronted the owner and demanded to see his business license, he immediately put the furs into a case.

Later the owner told reporters that he did not violate any law and had thrown away the dog furs, which he claimed he had bought from a friend.

Hong Kong’s Rabies Regulation prohibits the importation of dog and cat skins without a permit from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. But the sale of such products is not regulated.
